Summer Skincare Routine For Oily Dehydrated Skin- Ft. Kbeauty, Indian and Western Brands

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog!

When loose flowy clothing becomes the priority, cooking our favourite breakfast isn’t so exciting anymore and sweat dripping down the forehead and neck is a 24/7 part of our aesthetic appeal, then we sure are in the heat zone. As much as we all love summers, but when those crisp scorching temperatures hit, looking like a big grease ball is not an option we kinda long for autumnal weather.

While we are just about dealing with all the other factors, oily skin is another milestone to be reached because if it is not handled well, it can get even more complicated- think rough texture, sore red patches and painful bumps.

If you are one of those lucky souls(as claimed by many) and have a persistent shining face of glory during summers, live in regions with dry winds or excessive humidity then this post is a must-read for you, although, the below-mentioned products will work on all skin types- low hydration levels are found in most skin types so, take notes.

To simplify, I believe in doing what’s best for an individual’s skin than following all types of trends. Experimentation is convenient in fashion and styling but skincare is no joke, you may be left with more problems to take care of down the road.

In brief, an oily dehydrated skin feels greasy but tight and slightly flaky when cleansed. It can often look dull and lifeless with a rough texture.

Below mentioned are all the products that will help to balance out the moisture and hydration levels without making the skin excessively greasy so, please keep reading.

Amateurs often neglect cleansers and concentrate on how they can improve dark spots, get glowing supple skin like models, while it is very important to choose effective skincare products, why is cleansing always out of the loop?

Just like starting the day with water helps improve digestion and absorption of the nutrients, cleanser works by either balancing the pH or compromising it. No matter how good your leave on products are, if your skincare doesn’t have the right beginning, the consequences will have to be faced. Using wrong formulas take a lot away along with removing dirt and dead skin cell buildup, one of the causes for inflicted dehydration.

Derma E Hydrating Cleanser, is a gel cleanser that is formulated with gentle cleansing agents and has hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, B3 and E, papaya, chamomile and allantoin. It doesn’t leave the skin too squeaky, but washes away all the grime efficiently without any residue. Post usage my face and neck are left softened and very much comforted, thanks to the soothing ingredients. I use it both day and night and supplement with my current obsession, the original konjac on alternate day/night.

Choosing the right cleanser and washing efficiently will help stop the vicious cycle of squeaky clean and tight skin to an oily mess and this one is my current favourite pick for all skin types except very flaky dry skin.

Lip balms have a very special place in my heart and not just because of my personal preference but, also cause our lips do not have oil glands so, they get moisture only from external sources like lip balms/treatments.

Post cleansing and before applying anything else, lip balms are a must in my routine, any time of the day, throughout the year. Since I came across this orange lip butter from Raw Rituals, I can’t stop obsessing over it. It is made from natural ingredients, such as cold pressed oils and nourishing butters, no preservatives added, the citrus fragrance comes from orange essential oil and the texture is unapologetically soft, forget all the chapsticks, because this lip balm is literally like applying butter and the scent is addictive. The price tag makes it an accessible product for even the most cringy customers.

If you have been following my blog(please do, if you haven’t, means a lot), you know toners for me are in the forms of hydrosols. I have never enjoyed sticky residual feeling on my skin and probably the biggest reasons most k-beauty toners/essences are not my thing.

However, the brand BEYOND has some great products to offer and the Phyto Aqua Toner has just the right consistency and texture that literally sinks into my skin leaving it supple and calmed down. This toner is based on triple tree sap complex, an essential fluid or call it a ‘fuel’ for the trees to function and grow efficiently. Tree sap is rich in amino acids, minerals and vitamins that have antioxidant, anti inflammatory and hydrating properties. Bamboo, Birch and Grape Vine Sap formula in this toner absorbs quickly and visibly improves the texture and suppleness of the skin. Asian beauty experts long this ingredient as it works on all skin types. Phyto Aqua Toner is also fragrance free and infused with myriad of other plant extracts and treasured asian herbs like neem, white tea, mushroom, licorice, rosemary, japanese knotweed, skullcap, centella asiatica(used predominantly in k-beauty formulas for sensitive skin), cordyceps sinensis(type of fungus), chamomile all of which are high in antioxidants and work together to detoxify, hydrate, soothe and protect the skin.

It is great to use even when there are hot flushes/flashes due to excessive heat and sweating, keep in the refrigerator and swap it with numbing ice cubes, reapplying every few hours. Sometimes, I just use this toner at night layering 3 times before finishing with my heavenly scented propolis sleeping cream. I highly recommend trying out this toner if you like extremely lightweight yet good hydrating formulas. Great for all skin types and also for current “7 skin method” trend.

I strongly advise to slow down on exfoliation during summers, whether you use scrubs or leave on formulas. Our skin is constantly overstimulated during this time of the year so, increasing the cell turnover can lead to more sensitivities.

On the contrary, there are certain areas of our face where we tend to get clogged pores aka blackheads and whiteheads, in this case, salicylic acid works extremely well.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution is a simple, concentrated and no fuss skincare product to include in your beauty routine. 2% Salicylic Acid in well formulated products work by dissolving smaller comedones and dislodge larger ones, blackheads and whiteheads both. If you apply the tiniest drop to the larger deep-rooted comedones that look like small uninflamed pimples, they will loosen up and the extraction will be completely painless without scarring or any bleeding.

Just make sure to apply only a few nights a week as a very thin layer and let it sit for few minutes before continuing with other products.

If you want to try out The Ordinary products and have oily skin with pore clogging issues, their salicylic acid solution is the first product you should try out.

Serums are essential to add a concentrated layer of hydration and this product should never be missed regardless of your skin type. They have better penetrating formulas, offer multiple benefits simultaneously and cater to a variety of concerns. For maximum hydration one ingredient is widely used by thousands of brands and it is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid 90 Serum is from a Korean skincare brand Purito, their philosophy is to omit many irritating and controversial ingredients and fragrance from their formulas. This serum is a clear gel, it’s consistency is a balance between essence and gels, really lightweight formula and sinks in like nothing was ever applied. It is alcohol free, has a whopping 90% sodium hyaluronate, niacinamide, peptide, vitamin E and C, apple fruit, green tea, collagen, aloe vera, lactobacillus(probiotic), tuber magnatum(ever heard of truffles?), chlorella and glycerin making it a multitasking product for everyday protection, hydration, anti ageing, brightening and safe to use on easily irritated skin types as well.

After using it for three weeks now, I have seen only positive differences in my skin. It doesn’t feel tight anymore, I wake up with brighter plumper skin as opposed to tight, lifeless appearance.

I recommend using it both day and night alone or coupled with other treatments. It is not only a safe and affordable option to couple with AHAs, BHAs or retinol but actually helps to take care of dryness associated with chemical exfoliants.

I am not going to lie but, with 2-3 layers of Beyond Phyto Aqua Toner and Purito Hyaluronic Acid 90 Serum, my skin is already left well enough nourished. However, on extremely humid and exhausting days, my skin is left hot, flushed and excessive perspiration causes lot of dehydration too. I apply Brillare Science Comforting Gel-Creme Glacier on such days and it really helps by keeping my skin moisturised and calm with very little flushing.

It is a cream but absorbs like a gel, has no colour added and is specifically formulated for sensitive skin types very reactive to hot temperatures. It has swiss glacier water(ruch in minerals), shea butter, organic cactus stem extract, sunflower seed oil, phospholipids(fat) that provide both moisturisation and hydration(oil and water). All of their products are claimed to be free from parabens, mineral oil, petroleum, formaldehyde and animal cruelty.

When my skin looks a bit dull with tan(love mensome dose of vitamin D) I switch to a mildly brightening formula from Andalou Naturals.

Their Probiotic + C Brightening Renewal Day Cream, reviewed here, has been my go-to throughout this summer. Don’t be put off with the words “day cream”. I use it both day and night and so should you, don’t be fooled by some marketing terms. It has an amazing citrus scent, the formula is packed with antioxidants and is one of the best lightweight moisturisers I have tried. This brand is vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO verified, cruelty-free, either fair trade or certified organic ingredients are used, so if you are looking for a clean brand with good formulas without synthetic dyes or fragrance, this one may be just the right pick.

Without adequate sun protection, there will be no use in spending thousands of bucks for innovative formulas, and, hot flashes can also be triggered by the sun. If you have sensitivities from hot weather, then leaving home without a good sunscreen is only going to make matters worse. The scorching sun will induce heat leading to red flushing(and not in a good way) which can also lead to hyperpigmentation and sunburn, not to mention, oxidation.

I switch sunscreen formulas and when my skin is on the drier end, I like to use Skinfood Aloe Watery Sun Gel 50+ PA+++, It has both organic and inorganic UV protectors to provide broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. There is a faint scent and this light weight cream absorbs into the skin like a gel formula. It gives a subtle dewy finish and has no white cast whatsoever making it a great option for deeper skin tones as well.

Last but not the least is a hydrating mask again from Andalou Naturals, it is 1000 Roses Rosewater Mask, reviewed here. Hydrating masks are not supposed to be used only as masks, you can apply them as night time moisturisers if you don’t mind the slightly thick formulas, like myself. In fact, if you find moisturisers aren’t enough, pack a good generous layer of hydrating masks before heading to bed, just like how I recommend using hair masks instead of conditioners. Unlike many hydrating masks that have more silicone to give that smooth effect, this one has a combination of natural plant oils and antioxidants to provide both moisture and hydration. Made from rosehip oil, pomegranate oil, hibiscus, white tea, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate, cranberry extract, pure rose water, aloe vera juice and their patent fruit stem cell complex, I apply this mask before any event and also every alternate night as the last step of my night time routine. I wake up with baby soft cheeks and radiant skin, who doesn’t love that?

So, this are my recommendations for oily dehydrated summer skincare regime or anyone suffering from lack of hydration. Don’t forget to follow my blog, if you like this post.

Thank you so much for reading.

Good luck

  1. Great write up. Very well explained…should we use the salicylic acid as a spot treatment or all over the face

    1. Thank you! Neither as a spot treatment nor all over. You can use it on the oilier areas and places where you tend to get more whiteheads and blackheads.. like a thin layer

  2. I LOVE The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid! My skin is prone to blemishes and it really helps with inflammation or when I need to treat any spots.
