Going natural or “green” is on many of our minds. And I mean eating naturally sourced homemade fresh food and also using natural skincare and haircare products. Not all good quality natural and organic products are very cost effective which makes them a big no no for those who all are on a budget. Although I can not help with that, I can certainly share some homemade skincare recipes that do not require lots of ingredients or juggling with water based formulas.
For today’s post, I will be sharing a powder based recipe that takes less than 5 minutes to prepare and works so much better than many high-end products out there. Cleansing grains-a term getting lots of hits as of late but in Indian households, women have mastered the use of cleansing powders and adjusted the preparations based on their requirements. I love trying out simple beauty recipes where I do not have to invest in a lot of time and juggle with different temperatures, oil and water balance, stability, although I would love to learn more about organic formulations. This recipe is one of the first I tried in my teens. My friends were over at my place and we all were talking about different skin issues and I felt like there needs to something that works for all, is flexible enough so anyone can make it and wouldn’t cost a fortune.
I wanted to add orange peel, peppermint oil and other stimulating ingredients but I also wanted to concentrate on gentler cleansing and brightening at the same time. That’s where the rice, pineapple powder and hibiscus powder popped in.
3 In 1 Enzyme Cleansing Grains
What we need;
1 Cup of Oat Flour
1/3 Cup of Rice Flour
1/2 Tablespoon of French Pink Clay
1 Tablespoon of Pineapple Powder
1 Tablespoon of Hibiscus Powder
6 Drops of Chamomile Essential Oil
5 Drops of Rose Essential Oil
Mix all the dry ingredients in a clean bowl and add the essential oils. Combine everything thoroughly.
Store in an airtight container in cool and dry place.
This combination of cleansing, exfoliating and calming ingredients can be used as a daily cleanser, a non irritating mild enzymatic exfoliant and left to dry on the skin as a mask for deep cleansing and softening effects, perfect for the upcoming warmer months. To use, simply add some filtered water, rose water or honey for non drying yet deep cleansing and anti bacterial benefits.
Oats have become very popular because of their deep cleansing, inflammation calming and skin softening properties. Rice flour is a very good oil absorbing agent and does not cause any irritation because of its fine texture. Pineapple is an exfoliator and it works by its enzymatic action. French Pink Clay is one of the most gentle clays making it very much suitable for even the most sensitive skin. I also decided to add hibiscus powder because of its high Vitamin C content. Rose does not only have wonderful scent but it also works both in soothing the skin and working as a non irritating astringent. Chamomile is one of the most powerful anti inflammatories. I wanted to make an all in one product so you can use it for cleansing, as a mask and as a gentle scrub. (As this is a deep cleansing product, do not use it everyday as I believe in maintaining skin’s natural moisture balance.) Using these brightening cleansing grains thrice a week is sufficient.
