It has been quite sometime since I shared my tips and products on summer care essentials. There is always a broken link to how should we actually take care of our skin and what type of products should be circulated depending on the season. The market is always offering myriad of opportunities and every brand tries to showcase their products as one stop shop for all our beauty needs. I agree, it is not a piece of cake to master skincare and understand the science behind it, which is why we have skin specialists, aestheticians and of course, dermatologists. However, we all end up buying the most marketed products and feel like we have achieved our goals. By understanding our skin thoroughly and finding what products work best coupled with sensible shopping and sticking to a routine can really go a long way in keeping the skin youthful and glowy. But, there are times when we often neglect those essential steps of overall skincare that is crucial throughout the year.
Today, I want to share some of the tips and products leaning towards warmer months and suggest that you try to incorporate at least a few to help your skin tolerate the harsh rays, hot and dry winds or humidity and prevent the associated skin issues. Please read further to find out how you can use these simple yet sensible tips and products that can help you achieve a youthful glow.

Tip 1: CLEANSE DAY AND NIGHT
Regardless, of your activities whether indoors or outdoors, it is disciplinary to follow a cleansing routine twice a day. No matter how much our skin feels and looks clean when we wakeup in the morning, not everything that sits on our skin is visible to the naked eye. Some try to justify that washing face is only applicable if we are wearing makeup or have been out entire day. Sebum, bacteria, dirt, sweat and consequential pore clogging, dullness, oiliness is a viscous circle that happens even if we are indoors and not wearing a hint of makeup. Cleansing is the first and the most crucial step towards a healthy skin. Tip 2: WEAR SUNSCREEN OUTDOORS AND “INDOORS”
Skin is not exposed to sunlight when indoors. Sunscreen makes our skin greasy. Who needs to have a white cast on the face when it is dark outside. Excuses…Excuses…Sun is always shining, whether the sky is blue and clear or it is full of grey clouds. So, it is mandatory that we protect our skin. And do not be fooled, UV rays are so powerful that they can pass through the window glass and still penetrate our dermal layer. Tip 3: USE ANTIOXIDANT RICH PRODUCTS
Our skin is more likely to suffer from spots, tan, breakouts during the hot weather. Make sure to apply an antioxidant rich serum underneath your sunscreen as it will boost the fighting power and prevent from blotchiness, coarse leathery skin, sun spots and premature ageing. Tip 4: TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDS
Summertime, means holidays, beach outings and lots of fun in the sun. We are more likely to wash hands frequently during this time and that means sunscreen is washed off. Not to forget, all that washing strips the skin of its moisture and our hands are among the first to show the signs of ageing. I can not stress enough that we opt for sunscreens but should not forget to moisturise as well. But, most sunscreens are just basic UV protecting formulas. Tip 3: AVOID EXCESSIVE CAFFEINE AND SUGAR
Hot and dry winds or sweaty days force us to reach out for icy cold drinks. For some, like myself being outdoors in mid afternoon causes severe headaches and nothing works like an aspirin and hot cup of tea or coffee. While, it helps relieve the pain, excessive caffeine dehydrates the body and that shows up on our skin. Sugar is acidic and combined with hot weather, it can lead to several digestive problems which in turn affects our hormonal balance and eventually our skin suffers. The solution? Swap sugary drinks with mostly plain water and a glass of pure fruit and vegetable juice. Reduce caffeine intake to maximum twice a day and couple with twice the amount of water intake. Avoid being outdoors from late morning to mid afternoon. If that is not possible, wear UV reflecting glasses and wide brimmed hat or an umbrella with small sips of water every few minutes to avoid dehydration.
I suggest including lots of watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers and mint in particular.
Tip 5: DO NOT SKIP YOUR SUNSCREEN FOR LIPS
Our lips suffer the most, yet we hardly bother about them. We want to flaunt bright lip colours but we do not want to show some love to our pout. Lips do not have hair follicles to keep them moist by allowing the secretion of sebaceous glands, neither do have enough melanin to protect them from UV damage and are thinner from our facial skin. Consequently, lips dry faster, become uneven in terms of pigmentation and age faster. The best thing you can do is exfoliate gently and immediately follow up with a moisturising lip balm with SPF.
