HAIR REMOVAL!!CONVENTIONAL OR PERMANANT?

In this fast paced world where most of us are so caught up with day to day lives, work, ambition, kids etc, its hard to find a space for that “me” time.

With the ever expanding fashion industry and all the wonderful clothes to choose from and wanting to follow the current trend we are required to have our bare skin completely hair free.

There are many old, tried and tested options available out there like waxing, shaving and hair removal creams and wax strips.

Shaving is the most convenient and pocket friendly, but, it has to be done almost everyday or atleast three times a week. If overdone especially on sensitive skin, it can cause terribly inflamed follicles commonly called as “razor bumps”. Hair removal creams are used since many years as one of the at home treatments and are safe to use everywhere except face and genitals. Despite being safe, these too can irritate extremely sensitive skin, but nothing that can not be sorted with soothing gel or cream readily available in the market today. Waxing is the most popular with in salon hair removal for the ones who do not want to go with other professional procedures. It can be done on any part of the face and body and its suitable for majority of the population. However, there are quite a few like myself, who find waxing on the face overwhelming. I have had some bad experiences that resulted in swelling, burn and peeling of the skin.

While all of these are pretty much safe and inexpensive, one has to follow up regularly and it can be frustrating when you fall short of time before an important event or date.

Let’s presume, you have that one special date night and you had to work overtime because your boss needs you to prepare “that” important presentation. You finally reach home and there is hardly any time left. There is a thigh high slit sequinned gown staring at you and all you can see is hairy legs. Yiickssss.. Not wanting to make our partner waiting, we will probably end up wearing something not so sexy.

That’s when the lasers(selective photothermolysis) seem to be the sensible option. They are becoming popular by each day and newer technologies are innovated to enhance the overall hair removal experience with little to no discomfort. There is a lot of hype going that these do not work efficiently and are merely for the elite who can afford thousands of dollars to spend on just hair removal.

This is not entirely true. While there are some places that charge considerably high amount for each session and do not educate clients precisely, there are also clinics that disclose everything from clients hair type, area covered, machine used, at home care and tips and possibility of how many sessions will be needed. Laser treatments work incredibly well if correct diagnosis, technique and treatment is done. Once completed with the treatment, one can expect to be hair free for 6-8 months.

Let me explain in the simplest manner how lasers work on the skin. Lasers emit steady beam of light with fixed wavelengths that targets the pigment without affecting the surrounding tissue. What this means is, lasers emit light that heats the colour of the hair follicle and destroys it permanantly. It does not affect the skin surrounding the treated area. In this manner, the hair does not grow back and to treat the area entirely requires 2-5 sessions atleast depending on the area covered and client history. For the treatment one should have grown hair that is shaved before the procedure. It is also advised to not wax, depilate or shave in between the sittings. Women may suffer from hormonal imbalances that can have an impact on the regrowth of the hair. Finding the correct laser is important as hair colour and skin tone is major aspect.

There are different types of lasers used depending on the skin tone and hair colour and type. For example, ND:YAG laser works well on all skin tones and is even safe for darker skin people and Alexandrite laser is suitable for people with lighter hair colour(blonde or even grey hair).

ALWAYS DISCUSS WITH YOUR DERMATOLOGIST OR PHYSICIAN WHO CAN GUIDE YOU WITH CHOOSING PERFECTLY SUITED TO YOUR NEEDS AND CONDITION. DIFFERENT LASERS WORK LITTLE DIFFERENTLY THAN THE OTHERS AND PRE REQUISITES ARE TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION  BEFORE GOING AHEAD WITH RIGHT TREATMENT PLAN.

To address the needs of those who wants to reap the benefits of permanant hair removal, but, cannot afford to spend what the professional lasers call for, there are devices that use different technology but provide really good results.

Most of these devices use IPL(INTENSE PULSED LIGHT also called as phototricholysis) to gradually diminish the hair. This is a great option to test our skin’s response to light therapies and can be done at one’s own convenience at the comfort of the home.

However, one should be informed that the results can not be as dramatic as the ones from using the lasers. It can take few sessions to see the results and regrowth also reduces slower than from the lasers.

That being said, these are cost effective and can be used for years. Most of the hand held devices comes with cartridges that can be purchased ranging from 30$-90$. Individual device has a cartidge that can last anywhere between 1500-30000 flashes.

One such device that is popular is .SILK ‘n FLASH & GO that uses light therapy to remove unwanted hair.

It is small device that can be used on smaller areas like upper lip, chin to larger areas like legs as well.

If you have a concern reaching smaller areas than TRIA laser 4X  PRO is a really good one. Tria uses diode laser technology that is FDA approved for at home use. These do not require the cartridges to be changed and one device can last up to 90,000 flashes.

There are at home machines designed to cover larger areas that have larger mouth and will take considerably less time that smaller ones. One such example is REMINGTON

I -LIGHT PRO QUARTZ . This has a cartridge that can last for upto 30,000 flashes. This uses Intensed pulsed light technology.

I have tried to put together different hair removal techniques used currently some of which are old and some using the latest technologies. Many different lasers and at home devices are in the market today. Now it’s your preferance, necessity and budget that should be acknowledged before making an informed decision. I would also like to put forward this point that getting rid of unwanted hair is a personal choice and not something that I am imposing on.

I APOLOGISE FOR SUCH A LENGTHY POST. I DID NOT WANT TO PROVIDE WITH INCOMPLETE AND CONFUSING INFORMATION AND WANT EVERYONE TO UNDERSTAND THE BASICS OF DIFFERENT HAIR REMOVAL TECHNIQUES.

Finally, I would like to know what are your favourite ways of hair removal. Do leave your comments in the box down below and until next time..

GOOD LUCK.XOXO..
